Maia | Newborn Session

My sweet friend Sarah became a mom to a precious baby girl, Maia. I had a the pure pleasure of taking some newborn photos of her little fam. She is also a sourdough connoisseur and baked up a mean loaf at the end of our session!

Outfit Ideas for Newborn Sessions

What should we wear for our newborn session? The question I get asked the most. Well maybe that isn’t totally true. I probably get asked, “How much do you charge for …?”, the most. Ha.

The thing is once you settle on a photographer, the next thing on your mind is, I need to go shopping! If this isn’t your first baby, then you are shopping for multiple people, various ages, styles, genders. Everything from tops, bottoms, accessories, shoes, etc. It’s overwhelming!

The biggest tip I have when shopping for a family is to coordinate but don’t match. Mix textures and shades in the same family. And I am here to help! Send me pictures of your options, I will give you my honest opinion on what will look good on camera. I tend to love neutrals for newborn sessions - white, chambray/denim and tan. For colors, stay more muted but not dark - sage, terra-cotta, dusty grey blue, or pale pinks/mauve. These palettes can go for the whole family too! I have a Pinterest board of ideas that I send to clients to help them visualize the feel of the session.

I totally understand the urge to wear darker colors, like black and navy, as a new mom. You just had a baby and maybe you want to hide a few areas. Trust me I have been there. But here’s the thing, we are documenting life and the new life you brought home. Post mommy bodies included! I will still be looking to flatter you with angles but let’s honor our bodies for what they have been through and not hid them. I say that because it’s what I needed to hear it after I had Julia. You are beautiful and badass and probably a little sleep deprived but hey, that’s part of the territory!

To help get you started I am going to share links to a few of my favorite items. I love Target, Rylee + Cru, Lou Lou, H&M for onesies, gowns or rompers. I like outfits were you can see the baby’s feet so I can get shots of those. If you want to add a swaddle to the session to give some variety (like an outfit change) then check out Little Unicorn, Lou Lou has cute sets or even search Amazon you will find a million. The muslin or jersey fabrics are great. Good luck!
